Having made the choice to practice in secondary or tertiary care, higher training offers great opportunities to focus on professional capabilities. The GMC expects doctors to demonstrate capabilities across all nine domains of the framework which derive from the GMC’s own fitness to practice data, enabling them to deliver safe effective and high quality care to patients.
Each of the 66 medical specialties in the UK have incorporated the GPCs into their 2020 curriculum.
While it’s important to be aware of your own specialty needs, the majority of leadership learning opportunities are generic and the NHS leadership academy in the South East offer a wealth of events and online learning.
The South East regional team at NHS LA have published a suite of bite size learning opportunities incorporating leadership bites, shorts and espressos. Bites are 20 minute learning guides great for personal leadership style and managing teams asking key questions and creating opportunity for personal reflection. Shorts are 10-15 minute videos many of which mirror the leadership bites, which bring a richness of personal experience to the topics. Espressos and masterclasses are bookable group sessions lasting 60-90 minutes based on key leadership topics.
