Foundation Leadership development

Curriculum Requirements

The leadership requirements of the foundation programme fulfil domain five of the GMC’s generic professional capabilities as ‘capabilities in leadership and team-working’. The experiences that doctors have in the clinical workplace can be reflected upon with the aid of skills frameworks and then discussed with colleagues with an opportunity to receive feedback and act upon it to further develop expertise.

The LEADER form can be used to support both selection and educational discussions with a supervisor. This form uses a 6-domain model to explore the leadership skills involved in clinical experiences such as delivering care, working in a team, decision making and quality improvement and it facilitates excellent supervisory discussions allowing feedback.

Do you wish to extend your skills beyond those required for the Foundation programme ARCP? You may wish to consider joining the Edward Jenner programme, part of the NHS Leadership Academy’s suite of leadership programmes.

The programme is free to work through and the Launch and Foundations modules take around 6 weeks to complete leading to an award in Leadership Foundations. The self paced modules are a great way of exploring leadership knowledge and skills in your current working environments.

If you’re just about to start your foundation programme in the South Thames Foundation School you may be offered the opportunity to undergo a Foundation leadership and management apprenticeship in your FY1 year. This is a funded programme with workshops modules and mentoring that is currently provided at East Sussex Healthcare NHS Trust, Surrey and Sussex Healthcare NHS Trust and is about to start at Maidstone and Tunbridge Wells NHS Trust. More information will be available about this during your induction programme.
