The introduction to it all…
I’m Sarah, I’m the associate dean for clinical leadership across Kent, Surrey and Sussex, and while the main focus of my role is the leadership development of KSS doctors in training I hope that the content will be applicable to all healthcare professionals working on their leadership skills.
I’m based at Surrey and Sussex Healthcare NHS Trust where I’m a consultant anaesthetist, the director of medical education and the chief of education, part of the executive committee with a responsibility for education across the organisation.
There’s a wealth of leadership development activity going on across KSS, but we’re aiming to make it more visible to make it easier for you to navigate. This website and blog is designed to address that and with a range of social media links to choose from, the aim is to enable you to make decisions about your current approach to your emerging leadership capabilities. It should make it easier to develop your skills in your clinical role, using workplace opportunities already available to you with some additional guidance.
The image above represents leadership development as a journey with milestones to achieve at each stage of training in order to complete portfolio requirements for ARCP and to be able to demonstrate your leadership experience in your applications for your next career stage. Your goals for your development may well stretch way beyond those learning requirements, and so this site will also highlight opportunities for leadership courses and conferences and ways to take time out from clinical training to pursue leadership related fellowships at a regional or national level.
